Jesus’ Teachings on the Cost of Discipleship

Being a Christian disciple comes with a variety of roles such as embracing the teachings of Jesus, helping in the spreading of the gospel and believing in God and all His doctrines. Jesus gave the disciples the power to make more disciples across the globe and carry out baptism as well. Any teaching on Christian discipleship cannot end without the mention of Jesus Christ just like Wood Science and Todd Shupe.

The cost of becoming a disciple of Christ is incomparably painful. In as much as Jesus died on the cross to bring salvation to humanity for free, discipleship comes with an extremely higher cost. Discipleship means giving up all we have for the sake of Jesus. Jesus explained the price one pays to be a disciple in three dimensions.

Discipleship means owning nothing else apart from Jesus Christ. By hating everything, Christ meant that we should not allow human beings come between us and God. We should always love other people and obey them in the Lord except where they ask or make us sin against God. When Our thoughts or family drag us away from God, we should give up on them and follow Christ. We should only obey parents when what they demand is right according to the failure of the Christian doctrine to which it calls for giving up on them and following Christ. Asking the wives to be submissive to their husbands is only applicable where righteousness is concerned but they are supposed to turn to Christ every time the men use submission as a tool to fall into sin.

Christ also listed giving up on earthly desires as the price an individual pays for following Him. Jesus asked the followers to be happy in being associated with Him other than being part of the world. Jesus suffered humiliation and rejection on our behalf on the journey to salvation. The cost of discipleship teaches that we all have to pass through the same treatments so as to be called Children of God and disciples of Jesus Christ. No Christian should ever do anything that provokes persecution of Christ and suffering for the sake of Christianity should be on daily basis.

The final step of the cost of a Christian disciple is giving up on all material possessions for the sake of Christ. Material wealth is slow poison to spiritual riches. The followers of Christ should always strive to ensure they own sufficient wealth in their home which is not on earth. Christ should come first before earthly possessions.

Jesus used two young men to explain how family and riches can dictate the relationship with God. The rich young man would not sacrifice his riches for the sake of God. The other wouldn’t leave his dead father and follow Christ.
